But what if there were tiny moments, fleeting yet powerful, that could help counterbalance that stress? Enter glimmers. These small sparks of light remind us that safety, joy, and connection exist even in the midst of chaos. Imagine your nervous system is that overcautious friend who’s always on high alert, ready to sprint at the slightest hint of danger. Now picture it receiving a tiny, unexpected text message: “Hey, look! A glimmer just popped up.” Suddenly, that frantic, flickering alarm system takes a deep breath and decides, “Okay, let’s take five.”


Drawing on research by clinician and Polyvagal Theory expert Deb Dana, this blog explores what glimmers are, why we need them, and how they revitalize our well-being.



Deb Dana and the Science Behind Glimmers


Deb Dana, a leading translator of Polyvagal Theory for trauma treatment, introduced the term “glimmers” in her influential work, The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy: Engaging the Rhythm of Regulation. According to Dana, our nervous system is constantly scanning our environment through a process called neuroception. This unconscious detection system determines whether we’re in danger or safe.


When our neuroception picks up on a glimmer, it triggers what Dana calls a "small moment of positivity", a brief but vital shift toward calm and connection. In other words, glimmers help the body’s nervous system move away from a state of hyperarousal (triggered by stress or trauma) and toward a state of regulation. Her work shows that even these minimal moments of felt safety can spearhead larger changes in emotional well-being and resilience.

  • Encouraging Resilience:   By noticing and cultivating glimmers, you actively engage in a process of self-regulation. Over time, these small moments can accumulate, fostering a more robust internal sense of resilience and optimism about life.

  • Balancing Internal and External Cues:   While our environments often bomb us with triggers and negative information, glimmers highlight the positive. They remind us to look for beauty and connection, even in mundane moments, thereby enhancing our overall quality of life.

When a glimmer appears, your internal sensors (those little gossip networks inside you) start whispering, “Everything’s okay, relax!” It’s a switch from feeling like you’re at a never-ending boot camp to being at a mellow beach party where the only thing on the agenda is chilling out.

  • Keep a Glimmer Journal:   Jot down any small positive experiences you encounter during the day. Over time, you may notice patterns and even create a personal repository of safety cues you can revisit when needed.

  • Create a Glimmer Ritual:   Incorporate a simple, pleasurable activity into your routine—be it savouring a delicious cup of coffee, watching a sunset, or practicing a few yoga stretches. Rituals can serve as reliable glimmers that consistently remind you of your inner strength and safety.

  • Seek Out Positive Connections:   Engage with people and environments that lift your mood. Sometimes, a kind word or gesture from someone else can act as a powerful glimmer, reinforcing your sense of connection and security.


Stuck in a Cycle of Overwhelm


Without glimmers, our nervous system misses out on its natural cue to shift from a state of high alert to one of calm and connection. Instead of catching those fleeting moments of relief, we may find ourselves trapped in a loop of anxiety and stress.
